Second Grade:
We are continuing to work through Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 for Math, as well as Hot to Be Good at Math 2-4. We are using the Memoria Press Traditional Spelling II as well as their ELA selection Core Skills Language Arts a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publication. I also purchased Writing With Ease, first level one then level two, which my daughter is enjoying. We started reading Botanicum for science, and my second grader is enjoying the accompanying activity book. We are reading Story of the World vol. 1 for History as well as about a million read alouds. Most recently we finished Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and the first Harry Potter Book. We are nearly done with The Very, Very Far North for which we are hosting a book club later this month. We are also reading the picture books assigned by the Memoria Press 2nd grade lesson plans, although the student literature and Latin have fallen to the wayside. My daughter is currently reading Fortunately, The Milk and The Children of Noisy Village aloud to us.
Tales, as expected, are a huge hit. Saints as well– although we have only just begun with those.
Fifth Grade
We have been, in earnest, reading through the Bookshark Eastern Hemisphere titles. My son’s current reader is Li Lun, Lad of Courage. He has already finished reading The Big Wave and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Luckily for us we got to see a Japanese block print exhibition over the summer which included the infamous “The Great Wave” print. It was very cool to be able to put the art work within the historical context and general framework of what was happening in the novel. My son had been working through Bookshark science, and is now settled on an encyclopedia about Space, for which he is writing a narration in his notebook each time. For English he is doing Writing With Ease level 3, which is excellent, can I just say. He is also doing the Core Skills for 5th grade, as well as Memoria Press’s Traditional Spelling V. For history, in addition to SOTW, we are leisurely reading about Ancient India as well as the middle ages with the various read alouds assigned by The CMEC in year’s past. A lot of what we do is looping and there are just so many good books in rotation that we have a lot of streams going on. For math, we needed a switch up so we are currently working our way through the Key To Geometry series while I figure out which text is next. Right now it is looking like Right Start Math.
I hope to be able to come back soon and update about my 8th grader and my two high schoolers. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! I adjust things as necessary and sometimes I can’t even remember which things I have talked about in the past!
